HUM, 2026
metal springs, laundry rack, vibration motor,
mattress foam
70 x 190 x 35cm
The humming, which “might be heaven or bees or labour or
desire or electric wires” [Lauren Berlant*], is first felt in the
vibration of the numb fingertips [conductive flesh].
Located just beneath the skin, this humming will make the
objects around you begin to become lost to you, throw-
ing your body back onto itself [entrapment].
One more humming as you lay your head onto the pillow.
Here, thing you didn’t know, it comes to rest right next
to the vacuum cleaner hose [centrifugal forces], which
she uses to remove the flies from the ceiling. For weeks
from now, you’ll carry the image of a large bee inside you
[cloud of possibilities], because a bee is a hum and a large
bee is a loud hum. In vain, you’ll craft this bee [beautiful
mask] and buy a drone, only to discover that a bee is too
heavy for a drone and rain is too wet. The bee does not fly
[immobile body].
Another humming as the sudden uncontrollable heat
rushes through your face [involuntary movement]. The
blood vessels are flooded, high pressure makes them
swell [excess]. So you’ll go, take apart one or more toast-
ers, run electricity though the fine metal wires and hope
they too will blush [fire hazard] and hum.
